About the Job: Sparta has plans to grow rapidly in India and is seeking a Managing Director (MD), India to serve as engineering site leader for establishing and developing Sparta’s first Research & Development (R&D) presence in Mumbai, India. This leader is part of the R&D leadership team reporting to the CTO and will be accountable for a) establishing the India Global Center of Excellence (IGCoE), b) delivering quality releases of our industry leading products on schedule while satisfying functional requirements in a repeatable, predictable, and sustainable manner for long term growth and c) providing APAC customers with world class support and ensuring long-term customer satisfaction and loyalty. This individual will partner effectively with the North American management team to establish the Sparta culture as well as develop a Sparta Mumbai unique flavor that will enhance Sparta’s culture globally. The result will be a site that both the company and local employees can take pride in and that can be leveraged as a showcase to our customers.

This executive will be required to work effectively with Sparta’s executive team, including R&D, product, finance, human resources and more.  The successful candidate must be an inspiring leader, possess an excellent balance between business and technical knowledge, and have the determination, tempered with a sense of urgency, to turn ideas into reality. Strong design skills coupled with systematic vision and thought processes will help to bring a global team together to maintain, enhance and build innovative and state of the art products. Candidate must have an innate desire to lead whole product enablement and Agile efficiencies. The Managing Director, India, will be part of the R&D leadership team and report to the Chief Technology Officer.

As Managing Director candidate will:
  • Be responsible for leading Sparta’s Development Center in India and responsible for interfacing with customers in India/EMEA/APAC. 
  • Define the talent strategy for Mumbai that aligns with company strategy. 
  • Be responsible to collaborate with Executive Leadership and North American R&D teams to develop strategic and tactical solution plans for Mumbai R&D, especially future technology infrastructure. 
  • Be passionate about hiring the best talent and developing them by mentorship and creating an environment for learning and growth. 
  • Be responsible to clearly articulate corporate priorities to all engineering groups and ensure alignment. 
  • Be the key point of contact to manage the company’s vendors, lead reviews, and conduct audits of vendor performance and keep track of hardware inventory and software license(s).
  • Be responsible to build the employer brand presence of Sparta Systems within the Indian ecosystem and help drive it to become an employer of choice.
  • Have responsibility for key portions of the industry leading TrackWise Digital solution that is geared to be the flagship product of the company.
  • Drive predictable, repeatable, sustainable, and high-quality software development using Sparta’s Agile SDLC.
  • Be the senior point of contact for customer support communications and updates to Sparta customers.
Preferred Skills:
Professional Experience / Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Math, Engineering or a related field 
  • 15+ years of experience in Software Product Engineering, with meaningful experience in management of Software Product Engineering teams working with western based companies
  • 10+ years’ experience in developing / managing development of SaaS based enterprise applications for 100,000+ users using Agile
  • Expert understanding of software development processes and lifecycle 
  • Solid understanding of customer support processes and lifecycle
  • Proven experience in, and passion for, leading teams, mentoring staff, and transforming teams to achieve high performance and high quality
  • Demonstrated communication, organizational change and transformation skills 
  • Ability to acquire and develop talent, and build a culture of transparency and engagement
  • Customer facing communication skills including the ability to diffuse and manage customer escalations
  • Strong general management, leadership, staff development, customer service, financial management & problem-solving abilities
  • Track record of delivering high-quality results on time and under aggressive timelines and budgets
  • Team player – plays well with others yet holds staff and peers accountable

  • MBA or equivalent preferred
